BOKA on a three UFAK medal hunt

In the previous UFAK Championships edition, Team Botswana won one medal out of the three athletes that were assigned. BOKA president, Shihan Mpho Bakwadi, told Sport Monitor that the target was influenced by the number of athletes who will represent the country at the continental championships.

He explained that the trip to the competition was fully funded by Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC).

“As BOKA, we decided to take only take the gold medalists from the African Union Sport Council (AUSC) Region 5 Karate Championships that were held in Luanda, Angola,” Bakwadi said.

Team captain, Lethabo Sekano, said the team has been training from their own basis due to work and school commitments.

Sekano highlighted that while the UFAK team was selected using the AUSC Region 5 results, only gold medallists were picked including three BNSC Elite Scholarship beneficiaries.

“My personal target is a gold medal in individual Kumite and a podium finish in team Kata as well so that we can qualify for the World Karate Federation (WKF) World Cup. In the previous edition of this competition, we won a bronze medal and made it to three semi-finals.

“We are all in high spirits, I have been trying by all means to motivate the rest of the team since only me and Centy Kgosikoma have been to the continental championships and the rest of the team are making their debut,” Sekano said.

The team: Sekano, Kgosikoma, Lesika Motswagole, Tshegofatso Motswagole, Kutlo Thomas, Bofelo Daniel, Prince Ngwako and Louis Chengeta.
