The team settled for the second position after collecting 183 points when the championship concluded over the weekend in Gaborone. This year’s title was won by Zimbabwe with 203 points, with South Africa finishing third with 170 points. Botswana Darts Association (BDA) secretary general, Kagiso Kitso, told Sport Monitor that hosting of Regional 5 Championship is on rotational basis. He explained that after being granted the right to host, they were permitted to proceed with the event by Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC). Kitso revealed it was the 32nd edition of the competition, despite managing to conclude the championship, it was not easy due to financial constraints. “We managed to push because of the sponsorships and partnerships that we had. There were six countries that competed in the event and only Malawi and Lesotho did not show up,” he said.

“We had a Local Organising Committee (LOC) that was steering the event including guidance from BNSC. We had a budget which we struggled to reach, because in some instances we some shortages.”

According to Kitso, it was the last regional event of the year and it now means they will be going back to the national league including some tournaments.

Keneilwe Kabanna who was part of the senior women closed doubles team that scooped a silver medal alongside, Boipelo Masimele, said their match against South Africa in the final did not go according to plan.

She added they played well the entire week, but in the final match “we played a strong team”.

For her part, Masimele revealed she was impressed with their play, because they managed to beat other teams except South Africa.

“But I feel we could have done better against South Africa but we accept the second position and there is no need for us to feel bad.

“Ahead of the tournament, we went through rigorous training but fatigue during the competition crept in, throwing darts the whole week is not easy,” she said.
