Premier League Matchday 2: Champions face early tests

The weekend begins with Crystal Palace hosting Manchester City on Friday night. Palace enter a new era after Oliver Glasner’s departure, with Pierre Sage taking charge following a remarkable period that saw the club win three trophies in 12 months. City, meanwhile, are also beginning a new chapter under Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s exit.

Saturday brings a fascinating double-header at the top end of the table. Liverpool welcome Nottingham Forest to Anfield as Andoni Iraola takes charge of his first Premier League home match. The Spaniard is looking to restore the Reds to title contention after a disappointing previous campaign, with his high-intensity, vertical approach expected to bring a fresh identity.

Forest, now managed by former Palace boss Glasner, will have confidence from recent visits to Anfield, having won on their last two trips there.

Newly promoted Coventry and Hull meet in another intriguing contest, while Bournemouth host Everton. Tottenham then face Newcastle in north London, with Roberto De Zerbi beginning to put his stamp on Spurs. The Italian has made it clear that his ambitions extend beyond immediate results.

“I usually think about the soul, passion, spirit and mentality of the team and ⁠then the improvement we can do in the future, because I can't stay with the focus just on the present,” explained De Zerbi.

Newcastle, under Matthias Jaissle, are themselves embarking on a new era after Eddie Howe’s departure, making this a particularly interesting tactical battle.

Sunday sees Chelsea host Brighton, while Leeds meet Brentford and Sunderland welcome Fulham. The biggest spotlight, however, will fall on Manchester United’s trip to newly promoted Ipswich.

Gary O’Neil knows the scale of the challenge facing his side against Michael Carrick’s United, who will expect to challenge at the right end of the table.

“I'm told by people who have been there about the pressure and the size of the responsibility you feel every time you pull on that shirt because you are expected to win every game,” said O’Neil. “I'd think that's ingrained in how they approach things. I expect them to come down and want to give us a real tough game. No mercy, no soft feeling.”

The weekend concludes with a blockbuster at Villa Park as Aston Villa host defending champions Arsenal on Monday night. Arsenal are entering the season as champions for the first time in 22 years, but Mikel Arteta knows retaining the crown presents an entirely different challenge.

“We know that it is going to demand something special – and we are going to go for it. We know what it’s going to take, we know the difficulty of the task. That’s why we’ve never done it in the club, to win it again.”

Villa, meanwhile, will relish the chance to test the champions under the lights at Villa Park. With nine Premier League clubs entering the campaign with new managers, the 2026/27 season promises an unusually volatile title race – and Matchday 2 could provide some of its first major clues.
