It is said the deceased died from injuries sustained after he was allegedly hit on the head with a steel flat bar. The incident occurred a week ago when the departed was reportedly drinking alcohol with others at a certain yard at the same yard. According to police, the suspect arrived at the yard and allegedly began harassing the group, resulting in an argument between him and the deceased. As the two exchanged words, the suspect allegedly grabbed a steel flat bar and hit the deceased on the head.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police, whilst the injured man was rushed to Julia Molefe Clinic for medical attention. He was later referred to Princess Marina Hospital, where he remained under treatment until his death. Mogoditshane Police Station acting commander, Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, said the police have since opened a murder case. “We have been investigating an assault occasioning offence, but last weekend we received a report from the deceased’s mother that he had succumbed to his injuries whilst still receiving treatment,” Ramaphoi said.

“We have since opened a murder case and intensified investigations to locate and arrest the suspect, who is still at large.” Ramaphoi added the suspect is known in the area and police are hopeful that he will soon be located and arrested. Ramaphoi expressed concern over fights in the area, saying some disputes have resulted in people sustaining serious injuries and, in some cases, losing their lives. He said it appeared that people were increasingly struggling to control their emotions and anger, with some readily resorting to violence during disagreements.

“What is worrying is that people are always ready to attack each other, and sadly, they are often armed with offensive weapons such as knives,” he said. Police have urged members of the public to exercise restraint when faced with disagreements and avoid resorting to violence.
