Molwantwa finds joy in the ring

The titleholder not only walked away with the belt, but was also rewarded with a purse of P20,000. Molwantwa beat Tshephang Gomotho of Bond Boxing Club in a highly contested battle, winning all eight rounds of the bout on August 8 at Boipuso Hall in Gaborone.
The Master Fitness Centre boxer told MmegiSport that he started boxing whilst doing Form Three, 16, at Pitikwe Junior Secondary School in Lobatse and continued exchanging leather at Lobatse Secondary School (LobSec).
“When I was at Lob Sec, in 2014, I joined BMC Boxing Club, and at that time I was coached by veteran coach Dinners Sikele. I became a boxer because I liked individual sport; no one is to blame if things go west,” said the pugilist.
The national champion has been competing since 2014 and, in 2017, proved that he had something special to offer, attracting the attention of then national team coach Master Luza, who invited him into the national team.
The boxer born 30 years ago in Lobatse, with his roots in Hukuntsi, travelled with the team to Brazzaville, Congo, for the African Championships, where he reached the quarterfinals.
Molwantwa said he continued working hard, dominating amateur boxing and competing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Olympic qualifiers and World Championships.
“It is good to be an amateur boxer because that is where you can prove your fitness, techniques, discipline and more things to attract promoters,” he explained.
“I then decided to join Botswana Police Boxing Club in 2024. I made a move to turn professional in 2022, but it was not easy because I was still needed in the national team.”
The pint-sized orthodox menace has a record of three fights and three wins. Molwantwa said he is excited to be the national champion because he worked hard for it.
“I trained hard to prepare for my fight. I was trained by a highly experienced coach, Luza. At the moment, I believe boxing is growing in Botswana, especially professional boxing.
“My plans are to hold on to this title, and I am ready for any challenge, from anyone. I want to see myself facing a highly ranked boxer,” he added.
For his part, Luza described Molwantwa as a great boxer who is very committed, disciplined and honest.
“Remember, we come from far, since 2017 when I was coaching the national team. We integrated him into the team as an understudy and sparring partner to Rajab Mahommed. So, he understands my philosophy well,” Luza said.
Meanwhile, the organiser of the title bout, Bond Ngubula of Bond Boxing Promotions, said Molwantwa and Gomotho left everything in the ring. He said the two boxers were also proud of their performances.
“I have never seen such a bout in Botswana pro boxing. Molwantwa proved that he has grown as a boxer,” Ngubula said.
