Botswana Netball Association (BONA) president, Mpopi Moatlhodi, told MmegiSport that for the remaining weeks, they expect the preparations to cost P400,000.
She said preparations are moving forward, but obviously, the level of preparation is affected when resources are limited.
“BONA continues to seek corporate partners because the support we get from Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) is not enough to cover everything.
“We need enough support to give the players proper training, international exposure and the right facilities,” added Moatlhodi.
She, however, said the national team players are committed and working hard.
With stronger sponsorship, netball president said they can prepare at a much higher level and give Botswana the best possible chance on the international stage.
She said the nation needs to believe in Botswana netball adding that there is commitment and ambition.
“What we need now is support. I would encourage corporate Botswana, government, and our supporters to come on board and help take netball to the next level. When we invest in our players, we are investing in Botswana,” Moatlhodi pleaded.
Meanwhile senior netball team coach, Martha Mosoahle-Samm, said preparations for the World Cup qualifiers are gathering pace.
She added the team recently went to South Africa for friendly games as part of their preparations.
“The plan of going to South Africa was to get as much game time as possible as part of preparations for the qualifiers. “Everything worked out, and there were a lot of lessons learnt, but most importantly, we got an idea of where we are compared to other competitors,” the coach revealed.
She said they had a couple of new players and it was important to measure their performance against the rest on a different platform. Mosoahle-Samm said the plan is also to go to Pretoria for more competitions.
Regarding the final travelling squad to Nairobi, she said the coaches are still working with 18 players, trying different combinations. Mosoahle-Samm said she expects the final 12 players to be selected by the last training camp.
Only two teams will qualify from the African qualifiers, and they will be invited to compete at the NWC2027.
Nations that have already qualified for the Netball World Cup, which will be hosted in Sydney, Australia, from August 25 to September 5, are New Zealand, Jamaica, England, and South Africa.
