In a press release issued today, the DCEC confirmed that Salakae and six others are due to appear before the Regional Magistrates Court on 28 August on charges of corruption, abuse of office, corrupting a public officer and money laundering.

The agency said Salakae is alleged to have received P1.6 million, a Toyota Fortuner worth P575,000, and bush-clearing services as valuable consideration for influencing the award of a P1.455 billion government contract to Tau Grading and Construction (Pty) Ltd for the Ghanzi–New Xade road.

Responding directly to Salakae’s parliamentary remarks the previous day, in which he argued that State agencies should not weaponise corruption laws because by so doing, they stop protecting citizens and start protecting power. The DCEC stated: “We therefore, wish to state that the DCEC conducts its investigations impartially and without prejudice. Any allegations contrary to this are both false and misleading.”

The directorate emphasised that corruption and economic crime investigations form part of its legal mandate and “should not be interpreted as evidence of political targeting or interference.” It cautioned the public against speculation and urged Batswana to allow the judicial process to unfold, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the public interest and strengthening accountability, transparency and good governance.
