AFA, BP sponsor squash tournament

Associated Fund Administrators (AFA) and BP have availed P20,000 to sponsor the event while Sally Dairy has bought drinks. Players of different levels including women, juniors and veterans will take part in the tournament.

Players will be seeded accordingly, with first round losers competing in the plate event. Play will commence on Friday evening, with the finals scheduled for Sunday morning. The tournament is expected to attract top talent in the country.

All members of the public are urged to come and witness some exciting squash displays by the cream of Botswana players. There will be no cover charge. Food and drinks will be on sale.

After Botswana hosted the All-Africa Under-19 tournament last year, there have been very few competitive tournaments because of lack of funds.

Meanwhile, the Botswana National Squash Association plans a national open tournament mid-next year and the organising committee is hopeful that sponsors will come on board and ensure that the event is a success.

Besides this, other events planned include an annual junior tournament and social competitions. The idea is to strive to increase the number of youth playing squash and to get them to play at a very competitive level as well as to keep them enthusiastic about the game.

The association is striving to increase the number of coaches.
