Showa survives as BFL backs board rotation

The resolution was reached at the BFL annual general meeting (AGM) held at the Lekidi Football Centre on Saturday, a week after the gathering failed to proceed due to a lack of quorum. Showa has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks, with sections of the league's shareholders calling for changes to the leadership of the board. There had also been reports of moves to remove him from his position.
However, the Saturday's AGM did not remove Showa, with the shareholders instead resolving to implement a rotation system involving four shareholder representatives on the board.
The BFL said the principle of annual rotation had already been agreed at the 2025 AGM, but its implementation will now begin with the 2026-2027 season.
Speaking to MmegiSport, acting BFL CEO Idah Moinisi said the decision followed confirmation of the 2025 AGM minutes.
'Following deliberations and confirmation from the 2025 AGM minutes that the principle of annual rotation had already been agreed upon, shareholders resolved that implementation should commence from the 2026–2027 season,' she explained.
Moinisi added that work was now underway to determine the modalities and practical framework for the rotation.
The decision comes amidst a period of strained relations between the BFL board and some of its shareholder clubs. The leadership dispute had intensified ahead of the AGM, with calls for Showa and his board to step aside being reported in the build-up to the meeting.
Last Saturday's meeting, however, provided some stability for the current leadership. Unlike the previous week's failed sitting, all shareholder clubs were represented, including the newly promoted clubs, who were formally welcomed as members of the BFL.
Moinisi said the meeting was conducted in full compliance with the league's constitution and that all shareholder clubs had the authority to transact AGM business.
The board rotation is being presented by the BFL as a governance measure intended to improve accountability and widen participation in its leadership structures.
'Shareholders agreed that introducing a seasonal rotation mechanism for four shareholder representatives would strengthen transparency, accountability, good governance and the infusion of fresh ideas into board deliberations,' Moinisi said.
The agreement does not, however, bring an end to the league's outstanding financial concerns. Discussions on the BFL's financial position were deferred because of the extensive agenda before the AGM.
The league said a follow-up engagement will be convened to deal with all outstanding matters, including a detailed examination of its finances.
The financial situation has been one of the major issues surrounding the BFL, with recent reports putting the league's balance at a negative P3.6 million.
Financial concerns had formed part of the wider dissatisfaction amongst shareholders and added pressure on the league's leadership.
According to Moinisi, there is now a shared understanding between the board and shareholder clubs that they must work together to strengthen the competition.
'The agreement to implement the rotation of shareholder representatives is one step towards strengthening governance and ensuring broader participation in leadership structures,' she said.
Moinisi added that the board and shareholders remained committed to continued engagement and dialogue, including the forthcoming meeting that will conclude the deferred matters.
Whilst the governance and financial questions remain, Saturday's AGM also provided certainty on the immediate future of the competition.
Shareholders agreed that the 2026-2027 FNB Premiership season will commence over the weekend of August 28–29. Moinisi said preparations are progressing, with draft fixtures already circulated to club general managers for review, comments, and appreciation.
'The league is currently finalising the fixture schedule and other operational matters,' she stated.
Official communication on the confirmed fixtures, kickoff arrangements and other outstanding issues will be issued once the process is finalised.
