BoFiNet completes P43m local access fibre project

The P43 million initiative marks a significant step in bridging the digital divide and advancing Botswana's national development agenda.
A statement from the parastatal says the project has connected 191 customers across the three villages. These comprise 68 in Moshupa, 66 in Ramotswa-Taung and 57 in Thamaga, including businesses, government offices and residential areas. Beyond connectivity, the project created 210 jobs for Batswana during construction, demonstrating infrastructure investment's power to stimulate local economies.
This initiative aligns directly with the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) and BoFiNet's mandate to provide world-class telecommunications backbone infrastructure. By building critical fibre foundations, BoFiNet enables retail service providers to offer affordable, high-quality internet, fostering competition and lowering data costs for citizens.
'This project is about laying the foundation for economic empowerment and a knowledge-based society,' said Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey Seleka. 'By connecting business centres, government offices, and homes in these villages, we are unlocking opportunities for e-commerce, e-government and digital learning that were previously out of reach. “This is what BoFiNet is mandated to do: to build the backbone of a modern, connected Botswana.'
He added that the jobs created a just the beginning for Bofinet, in terms of ensuring that its mandate has real world good for citizens.
'This infrastructure will catalyse economic activity, helping realise the government's vision of transforming Botswana into a dynamic, high-income economy where all citizens can participate in the digital future. “These projects are central to keeping the BoFiNet story alive and demonstrating our commitment to the national agenda,' Seleka said.
The CEO said the completion of these projects underscores BoFiNet's commitment to achieving 100% national broadband coverage, ensuring no community is left behind.
The efforts form part of a broader strategic push to expand fibre infrastructure across the country, with particular focus on underserved areas.
