Debswana, Boteti District Council boost food security

Debswana invested over P2.7 million towards the development of the ranch, complementing Boteti District Council's P2.3 million contribution.
Speaking at the handover, OLDM General Manager Mogakolodi Maoketsa said the project, which Debswana has supported since 2022, demonstrates the company's commitment to empowering communities beyond the life of mine through sustainable livelihoods and food security initiatives.
He said Debswana's investment delivered critical infrastructure, including a fully equipped borehole, a 209,000-litre water reservoir, and livestock-handling facilities, as well as an initial herd of 46 cows, including two breeding bulls, and 31 goats, including one buck.
Maoketsa noted that the ranch has already recorded the birth of 19 calves, reflecting its promising long-term sustainability. He added that Debswana complemented the infrastructure investment with governance, business leadership, and technical training, equipping the community with management skills to ensure long-term sustainability.
Boteti District Council Secretary Mpaphi Kgomotso commended the partnership between the council and Debswana, describing the ranch as a valuable investment in the people of Khwee. He urged the community to safeguard the project, maintain its infrastructure and report any challenges promptly to ensure its long-term success, whilst encouraging the two organisations to continue collaborating on sustainable community development initiatives.
For his part, Boteti District Council Chairperson Onkhuparetse Monnaatsie encouraged the community to take ownership of the ranch and maintain it for future generations. He expressed hope that the ranch would eventually host livestock auctions, creating economic opportunities for local farmers, and urged the community to work closely with Veterinary Services to ensure the health and productivity of the livestock.
Closing the ceremony, Khwee Village Councillor Kenosi Meleko thanked Debswana and Boteti District Council for their investment in the project and pledged, together with the village leadership, to ensure the ranch is well managed for the benefit of the community.
The project intends to improve livestock production, strengthen food security, and create sustainable income-generating opportunities for the people of Khwee, marking another milestone in Debswana's ongoing commitment to delivering lasting value through partnerships with government and local communities.
