Way Kay turns betrayal into a soulful house anthem with 'Boloi'

Released on Friday, July 31, the single blends smooth melodies with a deeply reflective message about betrayal, jealousy and resilience, offering listeners a dance record that resonates long after the beat fades. Boloi, which translates to witchcraft in English, uses the term as a metaphor for the unseen forces that seek to undermine success.

Rather than only referring to the supernatural, the song shines a light on the people who smile in your presence while secretly hoping for your downfall.

Against a warm, understated house groove and velvety vocals, Way Kay delivers a heartfelt plea to God for strength and protection from envy and sabotage.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Way Kay said it reflects experiences that many people quietly endure.

“It talks about what happens, you know, in our daily-to-daily lives. You think you have people that you think are family to you or that you think may be rooting for you, but they are jealous of you. “In certain spaces they talk bad about you. They are jealous, they are envious of what you have, even though you might not have anything.”

The song was born from an intensely personal experience. Way Kay wrote and produced Boloi himself before bringing HBK Live Act on board to help shape the arrangement.

“We did the arrangement together, but I’m the one who wrote and produced the song. They just had a different perspective on how the song needed to move.”

He revealed that the record came from one of the darkest periods of his life.

“I wrote it from a very dark place. I had just discovered that someone I thought was close to me was waiting for my downfall. I was also reflecting on my whole music journey.”

Although the song was completed months ago, Way Kay delayed its release for nearly three months as he questioned whether it would find an audience without a structured marketing campaign.

“I wanted to just release it organically and see if it works, which it did, because I got in a couple of big playlists like New Music South Africa.”

The gamble appears to be paying off. Boloi is already gaining momentum on TikTok, where users, including listeners from neighbouring countries, are creating videos interpreting the song's lyrics and message.

While celebrating the release, Way Kay is already looking ahead to his next creative chapter.

“I’m working on a cultural project; something that resonates with our culture. I’ll be working with jazz legends, fusing the Amapiano sound with jazz,” he said.

With Boloi, Way Kay offers more than another soulful house release. He channels pain into purpose, crafting a song that speaks to the quiet realities of betrayal while reminding listeners that resilience can be just as powerful as rhythm.
