UDC finally implements the 'newborn allowance'

Last October, the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) government postponed the implementation of its election promises, revealing that it will be introduced from the 2026–2027 financial year.
In a press release, the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs spokesperson, Chandapiwa Baputaki, today stated that eligible low-income households with children under the age of one are now receiving a monthly payment of P300, plus arrears dating back to the programme’s start date of April 1, 2026. Baputaki said that approved beneficiaries have already begun collecting the funds in accordance with the approved implementation schedule.
'The payment of arrears reflects the government's commitment to ensuring that all eligible children receive the support to which they are entitled from the effective start date of the programme, April 1, 2026. The Child Support Grant is a key government social protection intervention designed to support children below the age of one year by assisting low-income households to meet their children's basic needs during the critical first 12 months of life – a period widely recognised as the foundation for healthy brain development, physical growth, nutrition, and lifelong wellbeing,' Baputaki said.
She also indicated that through this programme, the government is investing in giving every child the best possible start in life whilst promoting improved health, nutrition, and developmental outcomes.
Furthermore, according to the statement, the ministry advised beneficiaries that there is no need to rush to Post Offices or other designated payment points on the first day of payment. The ministry clarified that once funds have been credited, beneficiaries may collect their grants at any time during the month. Payments will remain available throughout the payment period.
'To ensure a safe, orderly, and efficient payment process, beneficiaries are encouraged to: Visit payment points on any convenient day during the payment month rather than crowding facilities on the first day. Follow instructions provided by officials and payment agents at all payment centres. Bring the required identification documents when collecting their grants. Report any payment-related enquiries to their nearest Social and Community Development Office,' read the statement.
