The arrangement with Soft Landings Concierge allows the citizen-led business to manage the airline’s refurbished Pula Lounge at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, providing high-class services and experience for international travellers.
The deal with the Gaborone City Investment Company is for the development of the new meal boxes on flights that serve both as a catering solution and also as a gateway to the city and the opportunities it offers. Each box features a QR code that links passengers to a digital directory, providing convenient access to businesses, services, attractions, accommodation, restaurants, entertainment venues, and places of interest in and around Gaborone.
Speaking at the launch of the Pula Lounge and meal box this week, Transport and Infrastructure minister, Noah Salakae, said public-private collaborations allow organisations to combine expertise and deliver services that exceed customer expectations.
“The aviation industry is highly competitive, and passengers today expect more than simply reaching their destination safely. They expect efficiency, comfort, convenience, and exceptional service. “Investments such as the refurbished Pula Lounge and improved onboard catering demonstrate Air Botswana's determination to evolve and remain responsive to those expectations,” he said.
Salakae pledged government’s continuing support to initiatives that strengthen the national carrier and contribute to Botswana's broader tourism and economic development objectives.
For his part, Air Botswana general manager, Bao Mosinyi, said the latest developments were part of efforts to promote both the airline and the country’s reputation to international travellers.
“We come in at the tailend and we are the last point of contact that someone visiting the city has, in terms of their experience,” he said.
Responding separately to BusinessWeek enquiries, Air Botswana head of public relations, communications and marketing, Malebogo Sesinyi, said Batswana can expect Air Botswana to continue pursuing partnerships that enhance the travel experience whilst creating value for the country.
She said the flagbearer is committed to working with organisations that share its vision of promoting Botswana, supporting local enterprise and delivering innovative products and services to customers.
Soft Landings, established in 2019, has established itself as a leading citizen-owned business providing airport meet-and-greet and fast-track assistance, VIP protocol, transfers and chauffeur services, travel planning, corporate travel management, lounge management, and tailored hospitality solutions.
The Gaborone City Investment Company, owned by the Gaborone City Council, is an investment wing aimed at boosting the local authority’s revenue and impact. Already, the company is generating revenue by leasing strategic assets such as market stalls, commercial plots, and advertising sites to private investors.
The partnership for meal boxes, strengthens Air Botswana’s established supply chain arrangements under which the meals served on board are sourced from local producers and food processors. The foodstuff and drinks provided are designed to be representative of the country’s cuisine.
“Our ambition is to build an ecosystem of partnerships that not only strengthen Air Botswana's offering but also open opportunities for more citizen businesses to participate in the aviation value chain,” Sesinyi said in an emailed response to BusinessWeek enquiries. “Ultimately, we want every partnership to contribute to a stronger national brand and a better customer experience.”
She explained that supporting local enterprise is an important part of the airline’s broader vision.
“Wherever possible, we want to source products and services locally because we believe Botswana has exceptional producers, entrepreneurs, and businesses that deserve to be showcased,” she said.
