Cash-in-transit robbers flee with empty cash boxes in Thamaga

During the incident, three unidentified men attacked a Security Services CIT vehicle and threatened security guards with what appeared to be a firearm before fleeing with three empty cash boxes. The incident occurred at around 9am on Saturday at Builders Mart at Marang Ward, Thamaga.
Thamaga Acting Police Station Commander, Assistant Superintendent Maimane Phele, said the security officers had arrived at the shop to collect cash and had already secured the money inside the CIT vehicle when they were confronted by the suspects.
'The suspects threatened the security guards with an object resembling a firearm. They took three empty cash boxes and fled the scene,' Phele said when confirming the incident.
He explained that police later recovered the getaway vehicle abandoned in Thamaga, where it had been parked amongst vehicles belonging to mourners attending a funeral.
'We recovered the vehicle together with the three cash boxes, which had already been forced open and damaged. Fortunately, the boxes were empty,' he added.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the vehicle used in the robbery had been stolen in Ramotswa on Friday night.
According to Phele, a taxi driver had allegedly picked up three unknown men as passengers before they turned on him, robbed him of his vehicle and drove off, leaving him stranded.
'The suspects removed the vehicle's licence disc and registration plates and scraped off the Ramotswa Taxi Association markings in an apparent attempt to conceal the vehicle's identity,' Phele said.
Police are continuing with investigations and are working to trace and arrest the three suspects, who remain at large. Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation is encouraged to report it to the nearest police station.
