Young stars shine bright in spellbinding production of The Wiz

The musical showcased not only the remarkable abilities of Botswana's young performers but also the transformative power of theatre to inspire confidence, teamwork and artistic excellence. It was presented through collaboration between New York-based non-profit Arts Ignite and the Botswana Secondary Schools Drama Association (BOSSDA). From the opening moments, the cast captivated audiences with infectious energy, polished choreography and commanding vocal performances.

Every song was delivered with conviction, every dance sequence executed with precision, and every character was brought vividly to life.

The performers demonstrated a level of confidence and stagecraft that made it easy to forget they were still in school, earning enthusiastic applause throughout the performance.

At the heart of the production was a distinctly Botswana interpretation of the beloved Broadway classic. Rather than simply recreating The Wiz, the cast infused it with Setswana traditions that gave the story a fresh identity.

Traditional drums punctuated moments of suspense and magic, while choreography rooted in local dance styles transformed familiar scenes into something uniquely African.

One of the production's most memorable moments came during Dorothy's journey into Oz. Instead of relying solely on theatrical effects, a whirlwind of dancers circled the stage in hypnotic motion, using movement and rhythm to portray the tornado that carries her into another world.

The sequence blended storytelling with traditional performance, drawing enthusiastic applause and demonstrating the creativity behind the adaptation.

The performers also captured the musical's enduring message of courage, friendship and self-belief. Their portrayals were heartfelt and authentic, with each cast member fully inhabiting their role.

There were no hesitant moments or forgotten lines; only a company committed to telling the story with passion and sincerity.

The production was the culmination of an intensive theatre programme that brought together 50 young performers selected from an initial pool of 300 auditionees.

Although the musical was rehearsed in just eight days, the final performance reflected the students' commitment, discipline and willingness to embrace the challenge.

'We started with 300 kids that performed for us. And then we spent eight days with 50 students from nine different government schools. These kids worked so incredibly hard,' said organiser, Nikko Kimzim.

The young cast was guided by an experienced creative team that included Kimzim, Tefo Paya, Malika Samuel and several other theatre practitioners and arts educators whose mentorship helped shape an ensemble capable of delivering a polished and emotionally engaging performance.

More than simply staging a musical, The Wiz became a showcase of Botswana's emerging performing arts talent.

It demonstrated what young people can achieve when given professional mentorship, creative opportunities and the freedom to express themselves while celebrating the richness of Botswana's cultural identity.

As the final curtain fell to thunderous applause, one thing was clear: the weekend belonged to Botswana's rising stars.

Their performance was more than a journey down the Yellow Brick Road; it was a vibrant celebration of imagination, culture and the extraordinary promise of the country's next generation of performers.
