The champion minds

This is adopting a winning mentality against all odds. Champions are built and nurtured and not necessarily born.
A champion mind is not a gift from God , it is a product of a serious investment in the tasks at hand. Not all students who become top achievers start from the top. Some have messy and humble beginnings.
They make it to the top after taking off from shaky and less promising foundations. Champions are not necessarily the smartest people in the room but they set themselves from the crowd through total immersion and unrelenting focus on their work.
In the world of champions failure is not an option. Success is a way of life. Some of the values and the characteristic features which distinguish students wearing champion minds are respect, discipline , concentration, focus and resilience. Respect carries both aspects of self worth and respect for one‘s environment.
Students should not harbour any doubts about their abilities. Champions treat failure as a temporary set back and not a complete abortion of the mission. Lessons learnt from the setbacks encountered are used to carve the way forward.
Champions are no quitters, they insist on having the final say in any tussle. Students who wear a champion mindset are big picture thinkers. They are not in school not only to pursue their own narrow personal agenda. They see themselves as ambassadors representing various interests ranging from immediate families, wards, villages to the the country at large.
Family reputation matters to them. If they come from successful families they could feel duty bound to do everything in their powers to perpetuate family legacies and maintain reputations.
If none in the family had been to the top, champion students seek to grow beyond the dreams and horizons of their backgrounds. Identifying with a bigger purpose such as uplifting of the family name or raising country’s national flag gives champion students the urge not to surrender but soldier on even when confronted with enormous adversity.
The joy and pride that come with pioneering something in one’s family or country is enough motivation. It is always sweet when one has to say I was the first in my family to go to the university or gain a senior degree. Children who kick start their journey of life from humble backgrounds can become ultimate winners and pacesetters if equipped from the onset with championship mindsets.
Another distinguishing feature of a champion mind is discipline. Discipline for a student means completing tasks in the middle of the night when no one is watching and monitoring.
It means refusing to yield when fatigue sets in or when there seems to be too many obstacles standing on the way of success. Discipline means achieving much more with much less and refusal to entertain excuses. Some students instead of taking responsibility shifts the blame to external factors.
A broken window in a school is an inconvenience but it cannot be used as an excuse to justify failure. Discipline motivates students living in poverty to gain extra mileage at odd hours. It means reading that extra page and solving a mathematical problem when one does not feel like it. That is the hallmark of a champion mind.
It pushes students to overcome barriers and obstacles which appear insurmountable.
A champion spirit is measured by the extent of concentration on task. Young people in schools face too many overwhelming distractions.
Drugs and substance abuse are tempting distractions and so are sexual activities. A champion mind knows how to navigate distractions and stay tuned on the business at hand. Students with a champion mentality understand the value of postponing short term gratifications inorder to win the big picture.
Champion students are bold enough to shun peer pressure and say no to things which do not add value to their lives. Champion students fashion their lives and activities around a vision. They are always conscious of where they are and where they desire to go.
Lastly, but not least, students who relentlessly pursue glory and success are resilient souls. Failing for them is a wake up call, providing data which forms a solid basis for proper planning and execution.
Champion students consider learning an interminable process. They learn invaluable lessons from shortcomings of the past. Enemies of academic success which students must shun are laziness, idleness, negativity and procrastination.
These are vices which should champions in the making avoid like plague because they derail and ruin futures. School work requires some sense of urgency. It is work that cannot work and procrastination is not in the DNA of champions. Students who are destined to go far give primacy to their studies.
That is what champions are made of. All schools could fare better if students were to be armed with a championship spirit- a spirit of warriors which sees opportunities in every challenge.
