The competition, set for Molapo Crossing Piazza on Saturday, will see 16 freestyle dancers go head-to-head in a unique contest where the audience, rather than a panel of judges, decides who advances and ultimately walks away as the local champion. After qualifying through a series of fiercely contested battles, the finalists will compete for more than national bragging rights. The eventual winner will book a place at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Finals in Zurich on October 24, where they will compete against the world's best freestyle dancers.
Unlike conventional dance competitions, Red Bull Dance Your Style places the power entirely in the hands of spectators. Dancers must freestyle to unpredictable music selections ranging from hip hop and amapiano to house, Afrobeats and international chart hits, with originality, adaptability and stage presence proving decisive. Reigning national champion, Lebo M, believes the competition can change a dancer's career. 'Winning Red Bull Dance Your Style Botswana last year was a defining moment in my career as a dancer,” Lebo M said. “It showed me that authenticity, confidence and staying true to your own style can take you further than you ever imagined. Botswana has incredible dance talent, and I cannot wait to see what this year has to offer.' Beyond the dance battles, fans will be treated to live performances from South African musicians Zee Nxumalo and Sykes, while renowned local hype man, Mdu Tha Party will serve as the event's official master of ceremonies.
Organisers say the national final will celebrate Botswana's growing street dance culture through thrilling one-on-one battles, crowd participation and world-class entertainment, promising an unforgettable experience for dancers and fans alike. This year's finalists are: Yarona Tumelo (Yaya), Ditiro Kapeko (Savage Hound), Campbell Kayure (Velox), Lerato Kganguapelo (Janice), Larona Mmusi (B-MO), Itumeleng Bosula (Brutal), Frank Reid (London), Tinashe Mangiroza (Mr Tee), Alvan-Michael Okere (Michael), Prince Tshikare (Ultra Kluch), Ella Phillip (Ella), Novea Van Wyk (Novy), Bosa Gadimorone (Sir Isaac), Archibald Gibbs (KAIZ3N), Bofelo Sethembeni (King Jozi) and Lindelwa Ndlovu (Kuruk). In a statement, organisers say the dancers will showcase their musical versatility, creativity and crowd appeal in pursuit of the coveted title.
