It is alleged that the gas delivery vehicle had just finished offloading a gas cylinder when the driver accidentally knocked down the child whilst leaving the yard.
No.13 District Traffic Officer, Superintendent Obonetse Matshego, explained the toddler sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Princess Marina Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
'The child is currently fighting for his life in hospital after sustaining serious head injuries,' he said when confirming the incident.
Matshego urged parents and guardians to exercise extra caution whenever vehicles are entering or leaving residential yards.
'We continue to plead with parents to always keep a close watch on their children and ensure they are safe at all times. 'Young children are naturally attracted to vehicles and may climb onto them or move behind them whilst they are parked. Parents should always know where their children are whenever a vehicle is visiting their home,' he said.
Police investigations into the accident are ongoing.
