The engagements formed part of Bomaid’s ongoing commitment to strengthening relationships with communities and stakeholders across Botswana, while creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue on healthcare access, customer experience, innovation, and the evolving health needs of Batswana.

Throughout the engagements, participants shared valuable insights, recommendations, and experiences that will help Bomaid continuously improve its services, products, and operational processes. Bomaid also appreciates the various organisations and establishments that generously welcomed and engaged with the Bomaid team during the visit.

A highlight of the Maun engagements was a special visit to long-standing Bomaid member Walter Balogi Nkemelang, who recently celebrated his 101st birthday. The visit provided an opportunity to recognise and celebrate a remarkable milestone while reaffirming Bomaid’s commitment to supporting members throughout every stage of life. Nkemelang’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the importance of health, well-being, and community support in enabling individuals to live long and fulfilling lives.

Other notable highlights of the visit include the media engagement session that introduced and onboarded journalists to the Thrive with Bomaid platform and the Thrive with Bomaid Media Health Challenge. The initiative seeks to encourage healthier lifestyles while showcasing the role of digital health solutions in supporting wellness and preventative healthcare.

“These conversations are an important part of our journey as a member-owned medical aid society. They allow us to listen directly to our stakeholders, understand their experiences, and identify opportunities to improve how we serve them. We remain grateful for the openness and constructive feedback we received during our engagements in Maun and other areas we have recently visited, including Francistown, Palapye, and Gantsi.

As we prepare for the upcoming Community Health Day to be hosted on June 20th, we remain committed to bringing health and wellness closer to communities while creating opportunities for meaningful engagement around prevention, early detection, and healthy living,” said Tshepo Happy Maphanyane, Corporate Communications Manager at Bomaid.

As Bomaid concludes its engagements in Maun, attention now turns to the upcoming Community Health Day scheduled for 20 June 2026 in collaboration with the Dutch Reformed Church in Gaborone and various community stakeholders. The Community Health Day seeks to bring healthcare services closer to the public while promoting a holistic approach to wellness. The event will provide an opportunity for individuals and families to access health information, preventative screenings, wellness support, and community resources in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The programme will commence with a community walk and wellness activities, followed by a range of health-focused engagements and screenings. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and take advantage of the services and information available throughout the day. A key focus of this year’s event will be breast cancer awareness and early detection. The initiative aligns with Bomaid’s broader commitment to supporting the Breast and Endocrine Unit at Princess Marina Hospital, which plays a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Botswana.

As part of this commitment, Bomaid is supporting the Unit by procuring critical biopsy equipment to strengthen diagnostic capacity and enable earlier detection and intervention. The Community Health Day will therefore serve not only as a wellness platform but also as an opportunity to raise awareness about breast cancer, encourage routine screening, and promote informed health-seeking behaviour.

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in Botswana and globally. Through awareness, education, screening, and improved access to diagnostic services, Bomaid and its partners hope to contribute meaningfully to improved health outcomes and increased survival rates. Participants attending the Community Health Day will have access to Bomaid’s innovative healthcare technologies and wellness platforms, including demonstrations and onboarding support for the Thrive with Bomaid mobile application and Bomaid’s Telehealth platform.

The Abby AI-assisted screening technology will also be available, providing attendees with an opportunity to learn more about preventative health screening and wellness monitoring.

The Community Health Day will bring together a broad range of healthcare providers, community organisations, professional institutions, and service partners committed to advancing health and wellness in Botswana. Confirmed participants include Tebelopele, Rebaone Clinic, Dr Maje Eye Specialists, the Princess Marina Hospital Breast and Endocrine Unit, Renal Care Institute, Grace Physiotherapy, Phumla Homecare, Ray of Hope, BotswanaPost, Blue Crystal, the Botswana Institute of Banking and Finance (BIBF), Rahim Khan Attorneys, HRDC, and Podiatry Africa.

Collectively, these organisations will provide health information, screenings, wellness support, professional guidance, and community services designed to empower individuals and families to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. Their participation reflects the collaborative spirit underpinning the Community Health Day and reinforces the importance of partnerships in improving health outcomes across Botswana.

The event is expected to bring together Bomaid Board Chair Dr Refeletswe Lebelonyane, the Mayor of Gaborone, leadership from the Dutch Reformed Church Gaborone, healthcare professionals, community leaders, partner organisations, and members of the public in a shared commitment to improving community health outcomes. The gathering will serve as a platform for education, early detection, wellness promotion, and meaningful community engagement.

“The Community Health Day is a practical demonstration of Bomaid’s commitment to placing members and communities at the centre of everything we do. Through partnerships, education, preventative healthcare, and support for critical health initiatives such as breast cancer awareness, we are investing in healthier futures for Batswana. As we approach our Annual General Meeting, we remain accountable to our members for the decisions we make and the impact we create. We are proud of the progress made through collaboration with stakeholders across the country and remain focused on delivering sustainable value while improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Dr Lebelonyane.

Bomaid believes that improving health outcomes requires collective action and collaboration across sectors. By bringing together healthcare providers, community organisations, employers, faith-based institutions, and residents, the Community Health Day seeks to create a platform that empowers individuals to take greater ownership of their health and well-being.

The public is encouraged to attend and participate in what promises to be a meaningful day of wellness, learning, community engagement, and support for an important national health cause.
