The project aims to improve healthcare services for infants and young children while creating a more comfortable environment for parents and caregivers visiting the clinic.
The newly established facility includes a dedicated diaper-changing station and a waiting area for mothers and caregivers. Plans are also underway to expand the facility to include a weighing section, feeding area, and other child-focused healthcare services, allowing infant healthcare services to be provided separately from other clinic operations.
According to the Mascom Kitsong Centre in Kopong coordinator, Derrick Lehutso, the project was inspired by the need to promote the well-being of children from an early age. 'We saw the importance of well-being from a young age, and this is the whole reason behind the idea of an infant station. We believe that with this toddler station, we can enhance the well-being of children from a very young age,' he said.
Lehutso explained that the facility was designed to create a dedicated space where infants and toddlers can receive specialised attention while parents access essential healthcare services. 'We wanted to create a space within our clinic where toddlers can have a place for diaper changing, weighing, healthcare education, and, with the assistance of the clinic leadership, we can extend more services that pertain to the healthcare of infants and children as a whole,' he said.
Beyond convenience, Lehutso said the initiative was also motivated by the need to uphold children's healthcare rights. 'We also looked at the human rights issue. As parents, we realised that there are gaps within our clinic about the healthcare rights of our infants. They do not have the power to change things themselves, hence why we had to act on their behalf, ensuring that we have cared for the future of this country,' he said.
The Infant Care Station is expected to improve privacy for mothers, reduce congestion in other areas of the clinic, and provide a child-friendly environment where caregivers can access healthcare information and services specifically tailored to infants and young children.
The project also highlights the growing role played by Mascom Kitsong Centres in community development. Established to serve as community empowerment hubs, Kitsong Centres provide digital services, internet access, training opportunities, and platforms for community-driven development initiatives. They have increasingly become vehicles through which Mascom identifies and supports projects that address local challenges.
For Kopong residents, the Infant Care Station represents more than just a new structure. It is an investment in maternal and child health, ensuring that young children receive the care, attention, and priority they deserve during the critical early stages of life. The project forms part of Mascom's broader 3 for 3 Campaign, which seeks to support impactful community initiatives across Botswana and improve citizens' lives through sustainable development interventions.
