Hatshe Lentle Cooperative Society and Burial Insurance scheme launch

The product, launched last week by Hatshe-Lentle Multipurpose Cooperative (HLMC) in partnership with Poso Insure, aims protect farmers and strengthen community resilience while ensuring that local communities continue to benefit from the fruits of their agricultural labour. Speaking during the launch on Friday, Minister of Lands and Agriculture Edwin Dikoloti emphasised that the insurance collaboration will help ensure that communities are adequately protected against risks that often threaten agricultural productivity and household stability. 'The launch marked the beginning of a shared dream rooted in cooperation, dignity and economic transformation,” he said. “The name Hatshe-Lentle, which translates to 'Beautiful Land', represent more than physical geography. Rather, it reflects the vision of a community determined to build a prosperous future through collaboration and shared ownership.' The insurance scheme was unveiled during the official launch of the HLMC, an event that celebrated a vision of unity, economic empowerment and sustainable community development. It seeks to provide a safety net for farmers and members while reinforcing the cooperative's broader mission of building collective prosperity. The cooperative was described as more than an organisation, but a movement aimed at transforming the lives of farmers, women, youth and entrepreneurs by enabling them to take greater ownership of their economic future. According to the cooperative's vision, HLMC seeks to become Botswana's leading community-owned sustainable agricultural cooperative through innovation, climate-smart agriculture, value addition and inclusive economic growth. Officials noted that many farmers and rural producers continue to face significant challenges when operating individually. Droughts, poor market seasons and limited access to resources often leave households vulnerable. Through collective action, the cooperative aims to address these challenges by creating stronger support systems and reducing individual risk. The newly launched insurance partnership with Poso Insure forms part of this broader strategy and it is expected to help ensure that members are protected while also preserving the value of agricultural production within local communities. The cooperative is also expected to create shared strength among producers by enabling small-scale farmers to negotiate collectively, much like larger commercial enterprises. Through economies of scale, members will gain improved access to markets, financing opportunities, training programmes and agro-processing initiatives that would otherwise be difficult to access individually.

Beyond production, HLMC plans to focus on controlling agricultural value chains including activities such as processing, branding, packaging, distribution, storage and market access. By retaining more value within communities, the cooperative hopes to generate greater economic benefits for its members and contribute to local development.

The cooperative further aims to position agriculture as a modern, profitable and technology-driven industry capable of attracting younger generations. In addition to agricultural development, HLMC has outlined ambitious plans to establish market clinics, agro parks, processing centres, distribution systems, hatcheries and feed manufacturing plants through partnerships with investors and technical experts. The cooperative also intends to explore the development of a funeral parlour as part of its long-term community investment strategy. The Minister said these projects are designed to create lasting assets that will benefit future generations rather than provide short-term gains. Members were encouraged to view their participation in the cooperative as an investment in long-term prosperity. The launch of the insurance initiative was also praised for recognising that community welfare extends beyond agricultural production. The development of funeral insurance partnerships and broader social protection measures was described as evidence of the cooperative's commitment to building a comprehensive community support system.
