The association's elections were conducted during the association’s General Meeting held on June 8, 2026, at the Hilton Hotel in Gaborone. The gathering brought together key stakeholders from across the hospitality and entertainment value chain, including nightclub, bar, restaurant, and hotel operators, event promoters, musicians, and other industry players.

Members elected Gilbert Seagile as Chairman of the association. He will be deputised by Abel Thomas, who assumes the position of Vice Chairman. Kenanao Mononi was elected Secretary General, while Wame Olopeng takes over as Treasurer General. Happy Khumalo was elected Vice Secretary, with Opelo Thebe and Bakang joining the leadership team as executive members.

The newly elected committee assumes office at a time when the hospitality and entertainment sectors continue to navigate evolving market conditions, regulatory challenges, and changing consumer preferences. Tensions have been simmering between industry players and the Trade Minister, Tiroeaone Ntsima, over extended liquor trading hours and the proposed plan to allow bars to open 24 hours.

The association’s chairman, Seagile, has emphasised the importance of collaboration and collective engagement to strengthen the industry’s contribution to economic growth, tourism, employment creation, and cultural development. He pledged that his committee will work to promote and protect the interests of businesses and individuals operating in the sector.

“We are committed to fostering stronger partnerships with government, regulators, private sector organisations and other stakeholders to address issues affecting the industry,” he said.

Additionally, Seagile said ABONIC's new committee will focus on industry development, stakeholder engagement, responsible business practices, and building a united voice for the sector. 'The association also intends to advocate for policies and initiatives that support sustainable growth while enhancing professionalism and compliance among industry operators,' he said.

The meeting further underscored the critical role played by Botswana’s nightlife and hospitality industry in supporting tourism, entertainment, and livelihoods. Stakeholders called for continued dialogue and cooperation among industry players to unlock new opportunities and strengthen the sector’s resilience.

'With a new leadership team now in place, ABONIC is expected to intensify its efforts to unite operators across the country and champion initiatives aimed at creating a vibrant, responsible, and sustainable hospitality and entertainment industry,' Seagile said.
