Mokomeng is facing a total of nine charges, including the three murders of Elizabeth Ramolala, Alefha Ramolala, and Katlego Ramolala from the Kgomokasitwa killings. Other charges include attempted murders of Happy Ramolala, Dibotelo, arson, and malicious damage to property.

Appearing before the High Court this week, the pro deo counsel Keorapetse Sambere, appointed by the state, indicated that he can no longer render his services to murder accused Mokomeng. Reasons that the triple murder accused does not want his services. “It was only in January that I was given the case involving the accused, and it was only yesterday I met him, and it was only brief,” Sambere said.

Sambere revealed that it was only then that Mokomeng apprised him that he was never told that he was given pro deo counsel for the matter. “The status is that the accused informed me this morning (yesterday), that he was not aware that he was allocated a pro-deo attorney of his choice, and for that reason I would like the court to make an order that I be released,” Sambere said.

Seeking clarity on the matter raised by Sambere, Judge Matlhogonolo Phuthego asked if indeed he is opting for another lawyer, and who? “I am represented by Ngaakagae’s law firm. I am given a new lawyer there, and I don’t know him by his name, as previously I had (Michael), who has since left the firm,” Mokomeng responded.

Not entirely convinced that Mokomeng has a lawyer, Judge Phuthego asked the accused if he was certain he had legal representation, but does not even know the name of the lawyer. “The thing is, I have a matter in Lobatse, and I’m with him in that case. They were supposed to see me before July 6, when I continue with the trial, and yes, we have not met currently,” he said.

Having listened to the two sides, Judge Phuthego adjourned the matter to November 7. “Attorney Sambere is hereby released as pro deo counsel on the matter, and the case will be adjourned to November 7 for status update. The accused shall remain in custody,” he ordered. The case continues.
