Magosi, as the team is known, broke new ground in the just-ended season when they signed Argentine midfielder Nahuel Melgarejo, making him the first South American player to feature in the local top-flight league.

Now, with the club looking to build on a promising campaign under Spanish coach Miguel Corral Torreira, Chiefs have turned their attention back to the South American market in search of firepower.

Speaking to MmegiSport on Thursday, Chiefs general manager, Owe Mmolawa confirmed that the club is pursuing two attacking players and negotiations are at an advanced stage.

'Yes, we are in the market, we are looking to sign a striker from Brazil and a winger from Argentina,' Mmolawa said without divulging further details.

The potential arrivals would add a fresh international flavour to the Chiefs squad as the club seeks to bridge the gap between itself and the FNB Premiership's leading sides.

Magosi showed signs of progress in the recently concluded campaign, but goals proved difficult to come by at crucial moments, a challenge the club hopes to address through recruitment.

Mmolawa said the club's transfer activity is being driven largely by recommendations from the technical team following a comprehensive review of the squad.

'All our targets in the market are a recommendation from the coach and his technical team. They have done a squad audit as the season concluded, and they have brought forward their recommendations to the management. Same as the team players who are transfer-listed, they are also part of the recommendations from the technical team,' said Mmolawa.

'So the club management is acting based on those, and the coach has been given total autonomy to decide.'

The transfer developments come as Chiefs reaffirm their faith in Torreira by extending his stay at the club. The Spaniard arrived at Magosi in January on a six-month contract that included an option for a two-year extension. His mandate was to challenge for the Orange FA Cup and guide Chiefs into the FNB Premiership's top three.

Whilst Torreira narrowly fell short of both targets, he made a strong impression during his short stint. Chiefs eventually finished fourth in the league standings and reached the FA Cup final, where they lost to Jwaneng Galaxy. The club hierarchy, however, believes the foundations laid by the 34-year-old warrant continuity rather than change.

'We have exercised that option, we have signed the coach for two more years. That decision was long made, I think, towards the end of the season. We, as the club, are impressed with the work he has done since he joined us. 'We admit the club had limitations, and he worked within those limitations. For example, the team, towards the end of the season, played without a natural left back, but we were able to perform,' Mmolawa added.

The administrator declined to reveal whether the new agreement includes improved terms, describing contractual details as an internal matter. With Torreira now secured for the foreseeable future and fresh reinforcements potentially arriving from Brazil and Argentina, Chiefs appear to be laying the groundwork for a new chapter.

Currently, Chiefs' foreign players' list includes South Africans Tefo Mofokeng and Simo Bobo, who are on loan from Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, respectively.

In addition, there are Melgarejo and Spanish utility player Aitor Aldalur, as well as Zimbabwean veteran striker Evans Rusike. Namibian defender Sisqo Haraseb and Zimbabwean anchorman Edson Gavara are expected to return after spending the last six months on loan. With two more foreign player arrivals, Chiefs are to trim down to five ahead of the new season.
