According to the Mogoditshane Acting Police Station commander, Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, police received a report of the incident at around 2 am from Go-Soko Ward in Gabane.
Ramaphoi said a 19-year-old young woman was roused from sleep at her family's home when she heard footsteps outside. Upon looking out the window, she allegedly saw a man carrying one of the roof rafters from their house and walking towards the gate.
'The young woman screamed for help after spotting the suspect. Community members allegedly responded in numbers, attacked, and started assaulting him,' Ramaphoi said.
Police officers rushed to the scene after receiving the report and found the man seriously injured. He was immediately taken to Nkopaphiri Clinic, where he was certified dead on arrival by the doctors.
Ramaphoi said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify and arrest those responsible for the fatal assault.
Police have appealed to members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected criminal activities to law enforcement authorities.
