Mob justice turns deadly in Letlhakane

The victim was discovered lying motionless by the roadside with severe injuries all over his body on Saturday morning. A passerby who found him alerted the police.
Confirming the incident, New Letlhakane Police Station commander, Superintendent Unoziba Rari, said the victim was rushed to Letlhakane Primary Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. However, he later succumbed to his injuries at around noon.
Rari said preliminary investigations have established that the deceased was allegedly assaulted by the four suspects on Saturday night.
'We have arrested two of the suspects, and investigations are ongoing to locate the other two. We have learnt from those in custody that the deceased had allegedly stolen some goods belonging to them. They claim that prior to the assault, the deceased was spotted transporting the items in a wheelbarrow and, acting out of anger, assaulted him,' Rari said.
Police investigations indicate that the assault left the victim with fatal injuries. Rari cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that criminal matters should be reported to the police for proper investigation and legal action.
'We urge members of the public to report any suspected criminal activity to the police instead of resorting to violence. Taking the law into your own hands often results in tragic consequences such as loss of life and further criminal charges,' he said.
The two suspects currently in custody are expected to appear before the Letlhakane Magistrate's Court soon, facing a single count of murder. Police are continuing efforts to locate and arrest the remaining two suspects.
