The accident has raised questions about the use of the vehicle after official working hours, as it was reportedly supposed to have been parked by 3:30 pm but was involved in the fatal crash at around 10:30 pm. Alcohol was also found inside the vehicle, prompting suspicions that the occupants may have been drinking before the accident or whilst driving.
Confirming the incident, Broadhurst Traffic Officer, Assistant Superintendent Matlhogonolo Baraedi, said police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
According to Baraedi, the vehicle was travelling from south to north when the accident occurred.
'We do not yet know the exact cause of the accident, but we suspect the vehicle was speeding. The driver may have failed to reduce speed when approaching the roundabout and ended up driving through it,' he said.
The vehicle was carrying four occupants, including the deceased. Baraedi said the deceased, who was seated in the front passenger seat, sustained fatal injuries and was certified dead upon arrival at the hospital.
'The deceased was a front-seat passenger, and we suspect he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. The driver and the two other occupants escaped with minor injuries. They were treated and discharged the same night,' he said.
He further revealed that whilst some of the occupants are employees of Gaborone City Council, others are not.
As part of the investigation, police collected blood samples from the driver to determine whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
