The event, which was held at Nando’s Main Mall in Gaborone on Friday evening, brought together grilling enthusiasts, supporters and judges for an electrifying showdown that celebrated precision, passion and culinary excellence.
After progressing through intense semi-finals held in Palapye, 11 finalists earned their place in the grand finale, where technique, presentation, flavour and grilling mastery were put to the ultimate test.
The atmosphere was charged with excitement as MCs kept the crowd entertained while judges deliberated on the performances of the country’s finest grillers.
When the results were finally announced, Katlo Ramatlopi secured fifth place and walked away with P2, 500 for an impressive showing. In fourth position was Thapelo Taka who earned P3, 000 after demonstrating strong grilling skills in a highly competitive field.
Claiming third place was Russel Tlale who received P4, 000 for delivering a standout grilling performance.
The competition intensified as the top two positions were revealed. Gabriel Mmereki finished as runner-up, taking home P5, 500 after narrowly missing out on the top honour.
The night’s biggest celebration, however, belonged to Matthews Matebu of Sunshine Marang, Francistown, who was crowned the 2026 Nando’s Master Griller. Matebu emerged victorious after impressing judges with his exceptional grilling expertise, securing the grand prize package that included P7, 500 cash, a first-class Emirates ticket to Sydney, Australia and the opportunity to represent Nando’s Botswana on the international stage.
The champion also received an array of prizes including a voucher and a top-of-the-range Lenovo tablet, adding to a memorable victory.
Speaking during the event, organisers praised the finalists for their commitment, skill and energy, highlighting the challenge as more than just a competition but a celebration of talent, food culture and the unmistakable spirit of Nando’s.
The finals concluded with prize presentations, group photographs and celebrations involving all 11 competitors, bringing the curtain down on another successful edition of the Grillers Challenge.
With Botswana’s new Master Griller now set to head to Australia, the 2026 competition once again proved that when it comes to fire, flavour and passion, Botswana’s grillers are ready to represent the country on the international stage.
