There are reports of betrayal and backstabbing as some allies who walked hand-in-hand in the lead-up to the 2024 victory are now growing apart.
The upcoming BFA regional elections, will be a test of character for Babitseng, who faces dissent for the first time since he came into office on September 14, 2024. The elections form a crucial part of Babitseng's survival, as much as they are key to his critics who are plotting his downfall. As they form part of the electoral college, which will test Babitseng's resolve.
'There will be a lot of horse trading. Knives are out for Babitseng as his critics feel he has not done enough. 'Some who were with Babitseng during the 2024 elections, have now crossed the fence, and he is aware of this,' a source said.
'There were considerations for a motion of no confidence against the president, but nothing came to fruition. What is key now is that both camps, the one that is loyal to Babitseng, and the one intent on challenging him, are securing the votes of the region's delegates. That is why this election is key,' added the source.
Reports are that differences have been temporarily put aside, as attempts to garner support for an ouster gain traction.
'On one hand, Babitseng remains unfazed at this stage as he is confident of winning the support of the region.
'On the other hand, there is growing optimism from the opposite camp that they will get their wish,' the source said.
The stage is set for a bare-knuckled contest expected to play out in the public gallery as the race for the 2028 elections heats up. The BFA elections committee is expected to issue the election writ, with high interest reported from across the regions.
Whilst Babitseng's position at regional level will be strengthened with his ascendency to the COSAFA presidency on Sunday, it is at home where the pressing issues await.
