Speaking in a recent interview with Arts&Culture, Charma Gal said the album has been “long overdue,” noting that they had long planned to release it but had struggled to align their schedules. While they have collaborated on a few songs in the past, they have not released a full album together since their breakup in 2015. “This is something we have wanted to do for a long time. However, our schedules have been clashing, and that has made it difficult for us to spend time in the studio,” she said. Despite the delays, Charma Gal said progress is finally being made, with at least two songs already planned for release ahead of her upcoming Kgosi Ya Mosadi Festival, scheduled for August 29.

“I can promise the fans at least two songs with Culture Spears before the festival. These songs will form part of the album we are working on,” she said. Charma Gal also emphasised that the collaboration is driven not only by artistic ambition but also by public demand. She said Batswana have consistently shown appreciation for both acts and have often called for joint performances. Charma Gal, who was one of the leading singers for Culture Spears, left the group after a fallout with her then husband and the group leader, Kabelo Mogwe, to go solo. However, fans have always called for the group to release an album and perform with Charma Gal, reflecting a deep-rooted love for the original Culture Spears, which included Kabelo Mogwe, Charma Gal, and Thembeni Ramosetheng.

Whenever they share a stage, the response is always overwhelming. Charma Gal said they want to give their fans more of that experience. She added that the limited opportunities to perform together have further delayed the project, as live performances often inspire their creative process. “We have not been able to perform together as much as we would like, and that also affects how we create,” she explained. The upcoming Kgosi Ya Mosadi Festival is expected to serve as a major platform to showcase the new material, with Charma Gal hinting at possible joint performances with Culture Spears as part of the event’s line-up. The anticipated album is expected to blend Charma Gal’s contemporary style with Culture Spears’ traditional sound, a combination that could appeal to a wide audience across generations. As anticipation builds, fans will be looking forward to the August festival for a possible first taste of the collaboration, which Charma Gal insists will be worth the wait.
