“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing.”– Theodore Roosevelt
Through the two-day event, over 700 athletes from 40 countries, and multitudes of spectators gathered in Gaborone to witness a world-class sporting spectacle.
Beyond the medals and performances on the track, Botswana won something equally important: international respect. One of the key pillars behind the success was the sterling work done by the Botswana Police Service together with other security agencies.
Their professionalism, discipline, and visibility throughout the last weekend’s event ensured that the country hosted a peaceful, safe, and crime-free international sport competition. From the stadium neighbourhood to shopping malls, entertainment areas, and major roads leading into the venue, security personnel from multiple agencies maintained a strong and reassuring presence. Their deployment sent a clear message that Botswana takes the safety of both citizens and visitors seriously. More importantly, they executed their duties with calmness, courtesy, and efficiency, qualities that reflected positively on the country as a whole. Large international events often come with concerns about crime, disorder, and public safety. However, Botswana managed to avoid such incidents, allowing visitors to enjoy the event freely and comfortably. Athletes, officials, and supporters from across the globe have since taken to social media to praise Botswana’s hospitality, peaceful environment, and organisation. Such positive international feedback cannot be bought, it is earned through collective effort and responsible leadership. The police and other security agencies deserve commendation because their work went beyond simply enforcing the law. They became ambassadors of Botswana’s image.
Through their conduct, they helped showcase the country as a peaceful, welcoming, and capable host of successful global events. In many ways, security personnel were the silent backbone of the tournament’s success. Equally deserving of praise are Batswana themselves. The public displayed discipline, maturity, and patriotism throughout the event. There were no widespread reports of violence, harassment, or misconduct that could have tarnished the country’s reputation. Instead, citizens welcomed visitors warmly and demonstrated the spirit of unity and respect that Botswana is known for. It is important to recognise that a country’s image can easily be damaged by a few unfortunate incidents during major international gatherings. Cases of robbery, violence, or mistreatment of visitors would have overshadowed the success achieved on the track. Thankfully, that was not the story of Botswana this past weekend. Credit must therefore, be given where it is due. To the Botswana Police Service and all security entities involved, thank you for a job well done. Your commitment ensured that Botswana not only hosted a successful sporting event but also proudly demonstrated to the world the true character of Batswana; peaceful, welcoming, and united. Indeed, we pride ourselves with Botho.
