Football returns to National Stadium

The Orange FA Cup quarterfinals arrive carrying everything that makes cup football thrilling. Once again the fallen giants search for relevance, while underdogs chasing immortality, city rivalry warfare in the midst and champions trying to tighten their grip on the throne. Friday evening under the floodlights sees Black Lions face Mochudi Centre Chiefs in a clash of desperation and expectation. Dibata may be fighting for survival in the league, but the FA Cup has become their escape route.
In their debut campaign in the competition, they have already built a reputation after eliminating third-tier side Ferry Wanderers before dumping fellow Premier League outfit Morupule Wanderers in the Last 16.
Teen sensation, Tlotlo Keipedile, has emerged as the face of the run. The 18-year-old claimed Man of the Match awards in both opening rounds and now carries the hopes of a club daring to dream beyond survival. Chiefs, meanwhile, arrive with pressure sitting squarely on their shoulders.
For Magosi, this is no romantic cup adventure but it is an obligation. Head coach, Miguel Corral Torreira, has already cooled expectations of a top-three league finish, effectively placing the FA Cup at the centre of Chiefs’ ambitions.
The club has not lifted silverware since winning the league in 2015, whilst their last FA Cup triumph came back in 2008. For a club of Chiefs’ stature, that drought feels like a lifetime.
After high-scoring wins over Santa Green and Enesia FC, Chiefs know anything less than a semi-final place will invite uncomfortable questions.
Saturday afternoon belongs to the Gaborone giants Township Rollers and Gaborone United (GU) as they meet in what is unquestionably the headline fixture of the quarterfinal weekend.
GU enter the clash with recent bragging rights, having won four of the last five meetings against Rollers. The Reds also edged the Blues in their most recent cup meeting when Mpho Kgaswane scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 semi-final victory in 2023.
History, however, still leans heavily towards Rollers in the competition’s grand occasions. Popa have beaten GU in multiple finals over the decades and remain one of the competition’s traditional kings.
GU are hunting a domestic double after sealing the league championship, whilst Rollers are trying desperately to rescue a season that threatens to stretch their trophy drought closer to a decade. That reality alone makes this match dangerous. Wounded giants usually swing hardest.
One man to watch is Kago Sesinyi, who sits joint-top of the tournament scoring charts with three goals and carries much of Rollers’ attacking burden. Between them, the two clubs own 16 FA Cup titles, with GU leading the count on 10.
Whilst the capital focuses on glamour and rivalry, another classic cup story unfolds at the Lokgwabe VDC Grounds where Lokgwabe United host Orapa United. This is the kind of fixture the FA Cup was invented for.
Lokgwabe, competing in the third tier, have bulldozed their way into the last eight by eliminating Flamengo Santos, Matebele FC and Majweng Sporting. Unlike Premier League clubs that joined later, Lokgwabe have survived every round from the very beginning, making them one of the competition’s hardest-working survivors.
Now comes their biggest test yet in Orapa United bring pedigree, experience and recent history. The Ostriches lifted the cup in 2019 and reached another final in 2023.
They are chasing a fourth semi-final appearance in seven years and looked ruthless in previous rounds, including a commanding 3-0 victory over Security Systems.
Sunday closes the quarterfinals with a Jwaneng derby at the Galaxy Stadium as defending champions Jwaneng Galaxy face Jwaneng Young Stars.
Galaxy have become the modern rulers of the Orange FA Cup. Back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025 transformed them from contenders into the competition’s dominant force and now they are hunting a rare three-peat.
Their opponents, however, are carrying the fearless energy that makes cup football dangerous.
Debswana First Division South side Young Stars announced themselves nationally by eliminating Premier League side TAFIC FC in a dramatic penalty shootout earlier in the tournament.
The underdogs are in the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. Galaxy are aiming for a place in history of a different kind.
The afternoon games kick off at 3:30pm whilst the evening tie is at 7pm.
