Police said the crash occurred around 7:30am along the Mahalapye–Bonwapitse road.
The vehicle was carrying four occupants at the time, with the driver and one passenger seated in the front, while two others were travelling in the back.
Mahalapye Police Station Commander, Superintendent Ntoko Simane, explained the group was travelling from a nightclub in Kalamare village, heading towards Mahalapye, when the accident happened.
“It is alleged that along the way, passengers noticed that the driver was speeding unnecessarily and began to complain,” said Simane when confirming the accident.
“During the argument, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing the two passengers who were in the back to be thrown out.”
The two passengers sustained severe head injuries after being flung onto the road. They were rushed to Mahalapye Primary Hospital, where a 20-year-old woman was certified dead on arrival.
Simane further revealed that a male passenger, also in his early 20s, sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalised, fighting for his life.
The driver and the front-seat passenger escaped the crash without injuries.
Police have since charged the driver with causing death by careless driving, and he is expected to appear before the Mahalapye Magistrate’s Court soon.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
