According to Tutume Station Traffic Officer, Assistant Superintendent Patrick Makoba, the combi was travelling along the A3 road from Maitengwe to Francistown, where it was involved in the crash.
Makoba confirmed that the deceased include two women from Maitengwe, one from Nswazwi and another from Pandamatenga.
“The combi operates along a route that passes through several villages, including Senete, Tutume, Nswazwi, and Sebina, amongst others. At the time of the accident, it had 17 occupants on board, the driver and 16 passengers, all of whom sustained serious injuries,” he said.
He added that the 31-year-old driver suffered severe injuries that left him immobile, whilst the injured passengers were rushed to various medical facilities, both public and private, in Francistown, where they are currently hospitalised, receiving medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the combi approached a T-junction from Sebina, attempting to join the A3 road.
“The driver was expected to slow down, yield, and safely drive onto the A3 road. However, for reasons yet to be established, he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the trailer of a horse-and-trailer truck that was driving from Nata side facing Francistown side,” Makoba explained.
Two of the victims died on the spot, whilst the other two were certified dead upon arrival at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital.
Police investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
