The man had briefly stopped at a local butchery to buy meat. He parked his car outside the shops, but upon returning moments later, he discovered that the vehicle had vanished.

Confirming the incident, Mogoditshane Police Station commander, Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, said police received the report at around 8pm, and investigations are ongoing to locate the stolen vehicle and arrest the suspect(s).

Ramaphoi noted that motor vehicle theft remains a serious concern in the Mogoditshane policing area, with Honda Fit models being the most targeted.

“It appears criminals have devised ways to break into these vehicles without using keys,” he said.

He further revealed that whilst a few stolen vehicles are sometimes recovered abandoned, the majority are never found. In some cases, recovered vehicles are found stripped of valuable components such as batteries.

“We have since discovered that many of the stolen vehicles are dismantled for parts within Mogoditshane. We have intensified patrols at scrap yards in an effort to curb this crime, as people continue to lose their vehicles,” Ramaphoi added.

He also highlighted that most thefts occur when vehicles are left unattended at entertainment spots, particularly at bars and nightclubs at night.

Police have urged motorists to exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are secured at all times.
