Confirming the incident, Woodhall Police Station commander, Superintendent Goitsemang Sekgabo, said the matter was reported by a 45-year-old woman who heard a baby crying late Saturday night.

“The complainant reported that whilst asleep at around 11:45pm, she heard an unusual sound of a baby crying from behind her house. Upon going outside to investigate, she discovered that the cries were coming from inside an unused pit latrine within her yard,” said Sekgabo.

He explained that the woman immediately alerted her neighbours to witness the situation before proceeding to Otse Police Post to report the matter.

Police officers swiftly responded to the scene and managed to retrieve the newborn baby boy alive from the pit latrine.

“The baby was rushed to Otse Clinic and later referred to Bamalete Lutheran Hospital in Ramotswa, where he is currently receiving medical care,” Sekgabo added.

The suspect, who resides in the same compound, was also taken to Otse Clinic before being referred to Bamalete Lutheran Hospital for further medical examination.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and the suspect is expected to be arraigned on a charge of attempted murder once investigations are complete.
