FUB pushes for ‘urgent’ insurance scheme for players

In an interview last week, Tshekiso said efforts are underway to have a medical and insurance scheme for players.
'So far we have secured funeral cover but had proposed a joint welfare fund, either administered between us, the Botswana Football Association and Botswana Football League or any other way, through which we will fund medical cover for players and or a part of players' retirement pensions,' Tshekiso told MmegiSport.
'All this is contained in the Memorandum of Understanding that we have with the Association, which I believe in no time, the (BFA) president will call me to finalise certain deliverables contained in the document,' he added.
He said they had an agreement with the league which expired at the end of last May, and a new draft document was agreed upon, but nothing has been finalised due to leadership changes at the BFL.
The BFL saw the resignation of the chief executive officer, Bennett Mamelodi, and the chairperson, Peter Kesitilwe. In their place came Idah Moinisi and Sipho Showa, respectively.
'The document talks to players' welfare issues relating to their insurance covers,' he said. Tshekiso said introducing insurance programs for players is 'urgent.'
'This should have been started at least three years ago. It is urgent.' Tshekiso said they had proposed that players' insurance be part of the compliance manual to compel clubs.
'Considering that at least two-thirds of the 16 teams struggle to pay the agreed amount and on time, we agreed that players' insurance forms part of the compliance. This will compel clubs to pay for their plays as a way of complying with the requirement. But as I hinted at the memorial, president Tariq pointed out a planned stakeholder engagement slated for June 20, where a lot of these pending issues, those he found on the table and those that his leadership proposes can be addressed,' Tshekiso said.
He said the hurdles towards implementation have largely been the gap between FUB and other role players, but they are working on closing the divide.
