The young man was a passenger in a Toyota Wish that had stopped in traffic ahead of the checkpoint when it was hit from behind by a speeding Nissan NP300.
The impact forced the Toyota Wish into another vehicle, a combi transporting students. Dibete Police Station assistant commander, Assistant Superintendent Modisana Seleka, confirmed the incident, stating that the injured passenger suffered head injuries and complained of back pain, and he is currently hospitalised at Mahalapye Hospital.
Seleka further revealed that the driver of the Nissan NP300, a 34-year-old man, fled the scene immediately after the accident. He later returned the following day at around noon and handed himself over to the police.
“When questioned about fleeing the scene, he allegedly told police that he panicked,” said Seleka.
Fortunately, the students in the combi and other occupants of the Toyota Wish escaped the accident without injuries. Police have since launched investigations into the matter.
