The incident occurred on March 8, 2026, when the now-deceased sustained severe head injuries and was hospitalised. He had reportedly been in and out of the hospital since the assault before succumbing to his injuries on Friday at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital.
Confirming the development, Botshabelo Police Station commander, Superintendent Sedisa Malefo, said the case has now been upgraded from grievous bodily harm to murder.
Malefo expressed concern over the rising number of murder cases involving family members in his policing area, noting that the latest incident comes just weeks after a separate case in which a nephew allegedly killed his aunt in Tobane.
According to police, the altercation between the cousins began at a local shebeen before escalating.
“The two started fighting at a shebeen and later followed each other to another relative’s yard, where the confrontation continued. During the fight, the suspect allegedly grabbed a log and hit the victim on the head, leaving him unconscious,” said Malefo.
The victim was initially rushed to Selebi Phikwe Government Hospital and later referred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital, where he remained under medical care until his death.
The suspect was arrested on March 9 and has been in police custody since. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
