Batlokwa to fill key bogosi vacancies

At the time, the dismissed leaders argued they had not been consulted. However, the tribe and Kgosi Gaborone maintained that proper consultation had indeed taken place. Now, Kgosi Goabamong Basha, Kgosi Boikhutso Pilane, and Kgosi Tautsagae Matlala have been identified to assume the roles, marking a significant step towards restoring stability within the bogosi.
Addressing the community at the Tlokweng kgotla on Saturday, Kgosi Gaborone explained that the positions of Senior Chief Representative, Chief Representative, and Headman of Records had remained vacant since February. He emphasised that, in line with established laws, such roles cannot be filled without thorough consultation.
Furthermore, he clarified that Section 22 of the Bogosi Act mandates that the appointment of a Senior Chief Representative and a Chief Representative be made by the minister, following proper consultation with both Kgosi Gaborone and the community.
“It is therefore imperative that such a process is grounded in meaningful engagement with morafe,” he said, stressing that consultation and dialogue remain the cornerstone of governance in Botswana. He added that the kgotla continues to serve as the highest platform for inclusive decision-making, where every voice contributes to shaping outcomes.
In addition, Kgosi Gaborone revealed that he undertook an extensive consultative process, which included more than 15 engagements with members of the Royal House, such as Bo Rrangwanaakgosi, Bo Rakgadi, and Bo Malomaakgosi.
He said these discussions were further extended to local leadership structures across the Tlokweng district.
He noted that the consultations were not merely procedural, but intentional, aimed at ensuring that those selected genuinely reflect the will and interests of the Batlokwa community.
Consequently, he stated that those identified are expected to prioritise the welfare and prosperity of morafe, whilst also working to unite the community and support Kgosi Gaborone in executing his duties effectively.
Moreover, he urged the appointees to demonstrate loyalty, integrity, and commitment to advancing the vision of the bogosi, whilst promoting harmony, development, and the overall well-being of the community.
Meanwhile, Kgosi Gaborone indicated that the next step will be to submit formal recommendations to the Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, who holds the authority to make the final appointments.
He expressed gratitude to members of the Royal House, local leadership, and the broader Batlokwa community for their active participation in the process. He also commended the selected individuals, encouraging them to serve with humility, integrity, and dedication.
