No.12 District Traffic Officer, Superintendent Itumeleng Maruru, confirmed the incident, stating that they received a report on the matter on Saturday around noon. He said the elderly man sustained serious injuries and later succumbed whilst receiving treatment at Princess Marina Hospital.
Maruru said the driver of the vehicle, a 47-year-old woman, is currently in police custody as investigations into the matter continue.
He further appealed to all road users, both motorists and pedestrians, to exercise caution and mutual respect on the roads.
“Roads are shared spaces, and no one should insist on their right of way at the expense of safety,” he said.
Maruru noted with concern that pedestrian accidents remain prevalent, urging both drivers and pedestrians to be vigilant and considerate to prevent further loss of life.
