Gaborone West Police Station Commander, Superintendent Knight Molosiwa, said the incidents remain a concern, with police recording between three and four cases weekly. He noted that most cases occur on weekdays, particularly from 5pm, when people are knocking off work and stopping at shops on their way home.

Molosiwa identified Molapo Crossing and Westgate Mall as the main hotspots for the crimes. He explained that thieves primarily target vehicles containing electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, and mobile phones.

“In some cases, we suspect that the criminals may be following victims from their workplaces after noticing that they are carrying electronic gadgets. They then track them to shops and break into their vehicles,” he said.

He added that only vehicles believed to contain valuables are targeted, raising suspicions that the suspects may be monitoring potential victims beforehand.

Molosiwa further cautioned motorists against leaving electronic gadgets or any valuables inside their vehicles, warning that shopping malls are increasingly becoming unsafe for such items.

As part of efforts to curb the crime, he said police have intensified patrols in identified hotspots.

“We have deployed officers to conduct regular patrols in these areas as a mitigating measure. However, we also urge the public to play their part by taking precautionary steps to protect their belongings,” he said.
