Confirming the incident, Mogoditshane Police Station acting commander, Assistant Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, said police are looking into the case.

He explained that a 64-year-old driver had intended to move the vehicle forward, but mistakenly engaged reverse gear, causing the car to move backward and hit the toddler, who was behind the vehicle.

'The toddler sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalised at Bokamoso Private Hospital,' said Ramaphoi.

Police have since urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly in residential areas where children are often present. They emphasised the importance of ensuring that the surroundings are clear before moving a vehicle, as such accidents can have devastating consequences.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
