The swimming gala is the second biggest in Botswana after the Botswana National Championships and attracted over 320 competitors and it was the last local one of the 2025-2026 season. DMSS Gators won the overall competition with 2, 419 points, with Gaborone Aquatics Centre finishing in second position with 639 points and Propellers Sports Academy finished third with 619 points.
The Meet director who is also DMSS Gators vice secretary, Leungo Tebogo, told Sport Monitor that the swimming gala also attracted swimmers from Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) from Zimbabwe and Aquarius Aquatics Swimming Club from South Africa.
There were two swimmers with disability from UB swimming club who competed for the first time at the gala, Tebogo revealed.
She said through events like the Gators gala, they do not only showcase talent within the nation but also inspire individuals of all ages to embrace an active lifestyle and priorities their well-being.
“The gala reinforced the importance of strong development structures, with DMSS Gators leading the competition with 2,419 points. It also highlighted the need for greater inclusivity,” Tebogo explained.
“The gala also showed that Botswana has an abundance of local talent and potential, we have the foundation needed to grow the sport. As a youth led club, DMSS Gators also demonstrated that young people are capable of organising and delivering high level events. With participation from clubs from outside the country, the event proved that we have the potential to become a sport hub. “However, to fully realise this, there is a need for continued investment in facilities, such as 50m pools, and increased sponsorship support,” she said.
According to the director, the gala reaffirmed that swimming is not only about competition, but about promoting lifelong wellness, participation and growth within the community.
