It kicked off with the soul-stirring sounds of the Tsutsube traditional dance, a mesmerizing display of rhythm and movement that told the story of a community that has lived in harmony with the land for generations. The audience was treated to a diverse range of performances, including the energetic Namastap and polka dances, as well as a captivating show by Ntirelang Berman. The different traditional groups from Kanaku and surrounding villages brought their unique flair to the stage, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the San people.
One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity for visitors to experience the San people's traditional way of life. Through exhibition stalls, attendees learnt about the community's hunting practices, a vital part of their survival in the past. During the spiritual night showcase, the performers took the audience through a breathtaking display of their culture, their traditional culture, where they believe in badimo (ancestors), and the gift of traditional healing using indigenous herbs, which is a testament to the San people's deep connection with nature. They also displayed their hunting skills, marriage, and many other aspects of their lives.
The festival was graced by Miss World Botswana contestant Ruth Thomas, who took the opportunity to immerse herself in the vibrant culture of the San people. According to the founder and owner of Mopako Rance, Kagiso Mopako, the festival was inspired by a desire to preserve and promote the intangible and tangible cultural heritage of the San people. 'We want to ensure that the younger generation understands and appreciates their roots,' he said. The event was guided by Kgosi Tshubalobone, a strong advocate for the preservation of cultural heritage.
