The community's love of horses is deeply ingrained in its culture, with many residents relying on the majestic animals for daily tasks, such as herding livestock.

Mopako Ranch owner, Kagiso Mopako, who initiated the event, says he was inspired by the community's passion for horses. 'The San community are natural horse riders, and I realised they needed exposure,' he said. 'They have the potential to become comfortable with the saddle, and with the right training, they could become professional horse jockeys, recognised worldwide,' he stated. He added that there are several skilled young riders in Kanaku whose skills need further polishing.

The ranch hosts the Tswana Horse Race challenge twice a year, with six categories ranging from 400m to 2000m. Prizes are substantial, with winners receiving between P1050 to P2500. Despite lacking sponsors, the ranch covers the costs, motivated by a desire to promote the sport and encourage young riders. 'We want to motivate the riders and help them develop their skills,' the ranch owner said.

The community has taken to the sport, with Kanaku residents proudly declaring it their source of entertainment. 'Whilst other villages prefer traditional choirs or football, for us, horse racing is it,' said one local. The event has become a significant part of the local calendar, showcasing the San community's rich cultural heritage and their love for horses.

Mpoako said the Tswana Horse Race challenge has also highlighted the need for professional training for both riders and horses. Many horses in the area are used for hunting or roam freely, making it challenging to compete at a high level. However, with support and guidance, there's potential for growth. 'With professional help, the Tswana Horse Race challenge could grow,' the ranch owner said.

The event has also brought attention to the community's unique way of life, where horses play an integral role to every day life. The San community's love for horses is not just about racing; it is about tradition, culture, and survival. As the event continues to grow, it's clear that the Tswana Horse Race challenge is here to stay, providing a platform for talented young riders to shine
