He was speaking this week in Francistown, where the bank first opened its doors in the country. The country’s oldest bank is exploring the sale of its full business, rather than just its Wealth and Retail Business (WRB) unit, which had been on the market since November 2024.

Masupe said the sale was part of a strategic shift by the global banking group and was expected to take the next 12 to 15 months.

He told clients and stakeholders that ahead of a final deal, the bank continued to operate as usual, reassuring clients of uninterrupted service and high standards.

“The announcement of the buyer will mark a significant milestone in the bank's history, and I can assure everyone of transparency and continuity throughout the process. “As the bank navigates this transition, it remains committed to delivering solutions that respond to the evolving needs of individuals and businesses in an increasingly interconnected world,” he added.

Masupe emphasised that the decision is not driven by financial difficulties, citing the bank's consistent return on equity of over 55%, with 75% of income coming from retail.

'The group has decided to refocus on being a trade bank, like we were 170 years ago,' he explained.

This move marks a significant shift in the bank's strategy, as it seeks to leverage its global expertise in trade finance and capital markets.

Masupe highlighted that the bank's strong presence in Botswana, where it has operated for over 129 years, was a testament to its enduring relationships and commitment to clients.

Masupe noted that Francistown, where the bank first opened its doors, is a symbol of the bank's deep roots in the country.

'Francistown is not just where our story began. It represents the deep relationships and enduring partnerships that have defined our journey in Botswana,' he said.

Acting Head of Wealth and Retail Banking, Diakolo Neo, reiterated the bank's focus on client relationships.

'Our clients are at the heart of everything we do. Your trust has enabled us to grow, innovate, and continuously refine how we serve you.'
