This powerful tribute to women's resilience and strength was a fitting dedication to Women's Month, shedding light on the challenges women face and overcome. Thari, which translates to 'woman is the pillar of the nation,' was a raw and honest portrayal of Botswana women's experiences, told through music, dance, poetry and storytelling.
The show explored themes of social ills, chronic diseases, mental health, physical and emotional abuse, and women's empowerment, leaving the audience spellbound.
Directed by Andrew Kola and choreographed by Kola and Kalima Mipata, Thari featured an impressive all-women cast, including Miss Botswana 2025 First Princess, Selwana Motsemeng.
The show's energy was unmatched, with the women delivering captivating performances that left a lasting impact.
Thari was more than just a performance, but it was also a social movement, a platform for dialogue, education, healing, and transformation.
Mophato Dance Theatre's artistic director, Kola, emphasised that Thari aimed to inspire self-realisation and caution audiences about the challenges women face.
The show's success is attributable to the talented team behind it, including musical director Palesa Motshodi and the entire cast. Thari was a testament to Mophato Dance Theatre's commitment to showcasing Botswana's rich cultural heritage and promoting positive change.
As the Setswana saying goes, 'Mosadi ke Thari ya Sechaba' – a woman is the pillar of the nation. Thari was a celebration of women's strength, sacrifice, and resilience, and a reminder of the vital role they play in shaping the future of the nation.
The production sparked conversations, inspired reflection, and left the audience with a renewed sense of appreciation for the women in their lives.
If you missed it, you definitely missed a treat! Mophato Dance Theatre continues to push boundaries and showcase talent that speaks to the heart of Botswana's culture.
