With both sides level on points heading into the encounter and only three games left on the calendar, the fixture carried the weight of a potential title decider.

For the Warders, it was an opportunity seized and one that now leaves them just four points shy of sealing a return to the top flight.

Despite the magnitude of the occasion and a packed home crowd, the opening exchanges were cagey. Dinare showed early intent, with Omphile Phale firing over from a 17th-minute free-kick.

That effort sparked a more open contest, as both teams traded attacking spells, but composure in the final third proved elusive. The deadlock persisted into halftime, with tension thick and promotion implications looming large.

On the resumption, Prisons XI emerged with greater purpose and control, gradually asserting dominance. Their patience a trait often preached but rarely executed under pressure finally paid dividends in the 70th minute.

Mokuye Shakambayo forced a save from the Dinare goalkeeper, but Tumo Keiketlile reacted quickest to the rebound, slotting home to tilt the contest in favour of the hosts.

Chasing the game, Dinare pushed forward in search of an equaliser that would have kept their automatic promotion hopes firmly alive. However, their efforts lacked the cutting edge required to breach a disciplined Prisons defence.

As the match ticked towards full time, the Warders delivered the knockout blow. In the 89th minute, Shakambawo turned from provider to finisher, tapping in from close range after a well-worked move down the right to seal all three points.

The result not only hands Prisons XI a crucial advantage in the title race but also dents Dinare’s momentum at a critical juncture of the season.

Speaking after the match, Prisons XI head coach, Tatenda Mbikiwa praised his side’s composure and belief.

“I am very happy. One would think since we won by two it was an easy game, but it was not.

“After a goalless first half, we knew we had to turn it around in the second half. At 0-0, we believed we could finish the job, and the players showed great patience,” he said.
